This palpable mass is primarily made of fat, with a central density which appears to be dependent within the mass. The margins are somewhat irregular, with an indistinct circumferential density.
The following films were taken 3 months ago immediately after the traumatic event.
Is an ultrasound examination indicated?

This mass has the classic appearance of fat necrosis by mammography, and an ultrasound is not necessary
All fat-containing masses are considered benign findings. Fat necrosis is a rapidly evolving process compared with most other findings in the breast. One would expect that this area will look different on next year’s screening mammogram.
