How to Apply – Independent
Application Process:
December 15, 2024 was the final deadline for applications. We will be sending out invitations soon.
For questions regarding the Application process, please contact our program administrator, Sam Rogers (srpat@uw.edu).
Eligibility to Apply to the Independent IR Residency:
Our minimum criteria include:
1.) A medical degree from one of the following:
- Accredited medical school in the United States or Canada; or
- Accredited college of osteopathic medicine in the United States; or
- Medical school outside of the United States or Canada, along with ECFMG certification
Passing scores on Steps 1, 2CK, 2CS, and 3 of the USMLE.
2.) Diagnostic Radiology residents currently in their PGY4 year (ESIR or Non-ESIR) are eligible to apply for the Independent IR residency
· ESIR applicants must upload the ESIR Applicant Diagnostic Radiology Program Director Standardized Letter of Recommendation (now an APDIR requirement for ESIR programs).
· The UW will review applications from both ESIR and non-ESIR applicants. We will interview/rank candidates based on application quality and not whether candidates will train as an independent IR resident for 1 or 2 years.
Selection Criteria for Interview Invitations:
The selection committee reviews all of the applications received in their entirety. Note that if you are an applicant who has NOT done ESIR, if you are accepted into our program, we guarantee you two full years of training. Those who complete ESIR prior to enrolling in the Independent Residency must also understand that the ACGME recommends that the Program Director for the Independent residency will review your performance during the training program to make sure you are competent and capable of completing the training program in only one year.
Specifics that the selection committee takes into greatest consideration: Experience and performance in Interventional Radiology and Diagnostic Radiology rotations during your training program, letters from IR faculty during your training program, performance on your clinical clerkships during medical school, comments on the MSPE summary statement, USLME scores, leadership and volunteer work, and research and publications.
Historically, most of our successful applicants to the traditional IR fellowship have received honors in the majority of their clinical clerkships (most notably in medicine and surgery), were members of AOA and received excellent letters of recommendation from IR faculty. Those applicants from schools that do not offer “honors” grades or AOA are not adversely affected.
Letters of Recommendation for the Independent IR Residency
Traditionally, applicants to the IR Fellowship would obtain 3-4 letters of recommendation, most from IR and Radiology faculty. We recommend 3-4 letters of recommendation in your application with at least two letters coming from IR faculty.

Interviews will be held in the afternoon, Pacific time, on:

To maintain an equitable experience for all applicants, we will hold all interviews virtually on RezRate. We are not able to offer on-site second look visits, again in the interest of maintaining an equitable experience for all applicants.
