About 150 students gathered for a Doctor for a Day (DFAD) event, which was hosted by Africatown Center for Education and Innovation and was held at Rainier Valley Leadership Academy on February 24, 2024. The goal of the event was to provide awareness and resources around in-demand healthcare careers to youth of the Black Diaspora community in the Greater Seattle region. The UW Department of Radiology team focused on promoting heart disease awareness and its associated disparities.

Radiology had its own individual classroom and groups of about 25 kids came to our station for 25 minutes at a time. We brought over one cardiac and the two abdominal phantoms, two ultrasound probes, two tablets, “Careers in Radiology” booklets, and some gel-like substances (we were running low, but learned hand sanitizer works well!) DFAD staff supplied extra easel stands, candy, and sanitizing equipment.

The kids had plenty of fun, explored the equipment and learned about radiology and heart health. There were rumors floating around that the kids enjoyed our room the most. Holler!

Said one participant, “I was at the Cardiology and Pulmonary DFAD workshop and was really excited to have worked with you. I really want to thank you for the amazing experience!”
