2024 University of Washington Radiology High School Immersion Program

Students, if you are interested in joining us for a week of discovering medicine and various healthcare professions through exposure to radiology (medical imaging) at the University of Washington’s Radiology High School Immersion Program, then please read on!

When/where will the program take place?

There will be three sessions offered throughout 2024. Each session lasts five days.

– April 8-12

– June 24-28

– August 26-30

When: Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Where: UW Medical Center – Montlake, 1959 Pacific Street, Seattle, WA, 98195

All activities will be held in the department of Radiology at UWMC Montlake. Students will always be in groups and under the supervision of radiology faculty, administration and medical staff. Students will be protected from radiation exposure but as an added safety precaution, they’ll be asked to wear a radiation monitoring badge and personal protective equipment.

If accepted into the program, what will I learn?

Students will learn about radiology, anatomy, imaging with radiography, ultrasound, CT, MRI and nuclear imaging, as well as the different career paths within the field of radiology (technologist, nurse, physicist, physician, physician assistant, informatic specialist, administrator). They will be given the opportunity to shadow various healthcare professionals to see firsthand what a day-on-the-job looks like.

Emphasis will be on hands-on experiences. For example, students will practice ultrasound scanning on phantoms simulating human tissue. Students will also have the chance to image various objects in several modalities (Radiography, CT, MRI, Fluoroscopy) to better understand the differences between them.

How can I apply?

If selected as a finalist, you will be asked to PROMPTLY submit the following additional documents:

  • UW Observer Application (includes vaccination records)

  • Recommendation Form (Evaluator should submit form directly to rmcarpus[at]uw[dot]edu)

We look forward to hearing from you and hope you will have the chance to participate in our program!

For any additional questions and/or application package submissions, email the program liaison, Rachael Carpus at: rmcarpus[at]uw[dot]edu.
