Biography

Avik Som serves as both an Assistant Professor of Interventional Radiology at the UW School of Medicine with a dual role at the Materials Science Engineering (MSE) department of the UW College of Engineering. He completed his B.S. in Biomedical Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University and then completed his M.D. and PhD training at the Washington University in St. Louis. After medical school, Dr. Som completed an integrated residency in Interventional and Diagnostic Radiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and simultaneous post-doctoral training at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Shortly there-after he joined the faculty at the University of Washington in Seattle with a clinical focus in Interventional Radiology.

His clinical specialty interests include interventional oncology, with a focus on embolization therapy and ablation (liver, kidney, lung), as well as treatments for portal hypertension, such as for ascites or variceal hemorrhage. He also has an active interest in interventional spine work providing care for patients with painful compression fractures, including vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty. In addition, he provides cutting-edge therapies for quality-of-life conditions, such as for uterine fibroids, benign prostatic hypertrophy, deep venous disease (e.g. pulmonary embolism, and iliofemoral deep venous thrombosis), early-stage knee osteoarthritis (geniculate artery embolization), and arteriovenous malformations (pulmonary, liver, or renal).

In addition, Dr. Som is the Principal Investigator of the UW IDEA Lab, where he leads the translation of novel material science advances for applications in Interventional Radiology based on his clinical practice, with a focus on novel cancer therapeutics, tissue engineering, and device development.  The lab’s goal is to generate new technologies inspired by the problems our patients face in our Interventional Radiology clinic and to develop cutting edge technologies to treat them.
