Dr. Pegah Khoshpouri presented at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium

By Pegah Khoshpouri, MD, Diagnostic Radiology Resident

I presented at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) in San Antonio, Texas, last year in December 2023. The title of our study is “The biological basis of breast MRI background parenchymal enhancement in women with high breast cancer risk.”

Our study suggests that increased background parenchymal enhancement (BPE) on MRI positively correlates with increased vascularity and higher estrogen receptor expression but not inflammation or proliferation within normal breast tissue in high-risk women.

These findings, along with established associations between BPE and cancer risk, could be useful to select and assess efficacy of targeted preventative treatments. My mentors are Dr. Habib Rahbar and Savannah Partridge, PhD.

I received a grant from the Charles A. Rohrmann, Jr., MD, Endowment for Radiology Resident Educational Excellence for in-person travel to the conference and related expenses. This opportunity allowed me to share my research with a broader audience, engage in meaningful discussions with experts in the field, and gain invaluable insights that will undoubtedly enhance my work.
