COVID-19 promotion clock extensions available for Assistant Professors and Research Assistant Professors
Promotion clock extensions due to the COVID-19 pandemic are available for assistant professors and research assistant professors with a current appointment. It is important to speak with your faculty and provide thoughtful guidance when considering these clock stops.
When do faculty have to decide whether or not to request a waiver?
- COVID waiver requests for faculty whose mandatory promotion and/or tenure review is scheduled for academic year 2023-24 need to be submitted to the school by June 20.
- For all other faculty, requests for COVID waivers may occur anytime up until June 30 before the mandatory promotion year. This process is similar to clock waivers that are granted in the case of the birth or adoption of a child.
Faculty who have already been granted a COVID waiver are eligible to request a second COVID waiver of the 2019-20, 2020-21 and/or 2021-22 academic years as long as they have been deemed meritorious in each of the annual merit review cycles during their probationary period.
Faculty members remain eligible for other promotion clock waivers in additional years based on qualifying reasons such as birth or adoption of a child. The maximum total is limited to four clock waivers for any allowable reason, including COVID-19, parental, medical, and/or other extraordinary reason.
